What is the School Community Council?

School Community Councils are comprised of elected parents and/or guardians whose children attend the school, elected employee representatives, and the school principal. As directed by state law, School Community Councils (SCC) review achievement data, help identify academic needs, provide input on school improvement plans (TSSP), and assist in evaluating the success of the plans. In addition, SCCs assist with the development and review of the School Safety Plan, the Digital Citizenship Plan, and Positive Behaviors Plan. SCCs also review and may offer input to the school electronic devices plan, safe walking routes plan and the school attendance plan.

The SCC is also responsible for determining how the LAND Trust funds are used in our school. When Utah was granted Statehood, parcels of land were placed in a perpetual Trust with the children of Utah as beneficiaries. Revenues from these lands go into the Permanent State School Fund. The dividends and interest of that fund are distributed annually to each public school in Utah.

Serving on the School Community Council is an excellent way to be part of school improvement and supporting your child’s educational experience. If you are interested in being a part of the School Community Council, please contact the school principal for information on how to apply. SCC elections for open seats take place once a year. Each school will advertise for open seats in their newsletter, on the website and/or in registration information and notify parents of when elections will take place and how to apply.

Every school website has a section on School Community Councils including who representatives are currently, meeting schedule, approved plans, agendas, and minutes of meetings and more.

Most importantly, your involvement with your child’s education will lay a foundation for future success at school and beyond. Please take time each day to talk with your child about school and encourage proper study habits.
