Agenda Items:

  1. Welcome and call meeting to order
  2. Approve minutes from last meeting
    1. Minutes approved
      1. Liz and Amy
  3. Review current year’s plans: LAND Trust, TSSP, Safe Walking Routes, Positive Behavior Plan, School Safety and Digital Citizenship, Electronic Device Plan
    1. 82% are above bench march
    2. Amount remaining in budget is 14,467
    3. Plan for teacher days
      1. Recess aids can use support
      2. Make a google doc to organize volunteers’ cut and copy etc.
  4. Finalize Safe Walking Routes Plan.  Plans are due October 31.
    1. This has not changed in the last few years
      1. Sidewalks west of the school are not shoveled in the winter
      2. Crossing guards seemed to be staying on Titian and Danish
      3. There is no crossing guard on creek
  5. Receive School Safety report and Digital Citizenship report from district and begin discussion – this year’s plans are due in December.
    1. Mr. Walker proposes we wait until next month to discuss these reports
  6. Request to transfer $3,000 in Cell Tower funds to Principal Discretionary Spending
    1. This is not technically SCC money- it doesn’t co-mingle with LAND trust but for accountability we give permission for this to be of use for Mr. Walker.
      1. Funds are mostly used for getting meals for teachers.
      2. Do we use it to fund anything else?
        1. Mrs. Draper used it for food, pie etc.
        2. Maybe if a child comes to school and needs some pants or something- we would use those funds.
        3. We are accountable for those funds but it is not TSSP/LAND Trust funds.
        4. Mrs. Benschoff- how is she getting money for more art supplies?
          1. If she needs it she can ask for it- it comes from the school’s supplies fund.

–All approved of Cell Funds going to Principal discretionary fund

  1. Review of budget for 26/27
    1. Discuss/approve amendment to our plan to add hours for additional behavior/academic support
      1. Behavior slash academic interventionist- we can hire one. It works out to be 4.5 hours a day. Or we can add these hours to our current interventionist.
      2. When someone is doing both academic and behavior going to be available on the spot for behaviors.
      3. Time of day? Have to look at that and figure out where the extra support will be needed.
      4. This can be posted as soon as we vote on it. This would be a year to year position to be reevaluated next year.
        1. 22 hrs/week = approximately $13,000 for the rest of the year.

  1. Discuss questions about FTE loss that occurred in August.
    1. Is there anything we can do to minimize the impact of them losing funds next year
      1. After looking at the numbers on the district spreadsheet, we can, as a school, figure out how we can distribute.
        1. This last year the spreadsheet was rounding up- then they stopped rounding up
        2. We have only lost one teacher this year
        3. We lost two hired three- knowing we were paying for one.
        4. When we hired the additional teacher, we had the numbers- but the rounding numbers changed things. The 1st  day numbers were at a certain number and then the rounding numbers threw things off.
        5. Mr. Walker: What has happened has happened.
          1. But we can make phone calls and help follow up on students enrolled to know what numbers to expect.
          2. The switch to the Q Skyward, we had some haziness- not being able to see old students that had registered.
          3. Mr. Walker- we did our best to account for the kids who were not coming back even though they hadn’t officially withdrawn.
  1. The district permit system also had changed over the summer. A lot of these things will be avoided in the future.
  2. They are no longer allowing for a half teacher. You either get a full time or not one at all.
    1. They are no longer rounding up. That is what happened to us. Why not let SCC’s fund the other half?
  3. If nothing changes and enrollment stays on track will our FTE be 19? When we lose our 5th grade we lose 100, only 60 kindergarteners enrolled this year.
  4. The qualm isn’t with the teachers, its the 30 plus classes is just a lot for teachers.
    1. What can we do to decrease the weight on the teachers?
    2. Decisions were made based on numbers and discussion and data. The upper grades are where the larger class sizes should go.
  1. Discuss questions about recesses.
    1. Shawn- we do have different recess patterns in our school- they are based on a year to year need and how schedules worked out.
    2. Shawn shows Master Schedule Components Grade k-5
      1. The master schedule shows what the district requires timewise in each grade for each subject of learning, recess/lunch/transitions, and boosters.
      2. Clarification requested because the Utah Board of Education law put into place says recess counts as instructional time, but the district has made these requirements for Canyons on how to use the instructional time. We talked about the laws and district requirements as well as how teachers feel like they have so much curriculum to get through because of these requirements.
      3. Megan talked about how she is a nurse practitioner in mental health as well as running a wilderness therapy program for teenagers in Costa Rica. She treats children for mental health and when she does this she constantly is talking to them about being outside. States that she is often dealing from the fall out of pressure and stressed out young kids. An outside break supports mental health and prepares young minds to learn more.
      4. Discussion around mental health and the link to the outdoors as well as attention spans for young elementary school students and how they range from 16 min to 40 min tops.
      5. Principal Walker talked about how he agrees with these things but has these requirements from the district.
      6. Teachers express their concerns with the logistics, transitions, getting through curriculum etc.
      7. Some teachers express that they don’t want to have to go out outside for a third recess because there are also behavior problems  but would be more willing if we had recess aids.
      8. Mr. Walker suggests we make a sub committee.
        1. Jenny informs us that we need an odd number of members in a sub committee.
